NYC

Early this morning started the 8th largest winter storm in NYC history. It snowed yesterday as well and I was worried that they might close the NYC public schools. I had made an appointment to teach a yoga class to 6th graders at P.S. 161. Located on 133rd on the west side I was invited by a woman I had met at the Jivamukti Cafe; Lindsay Brown. She is a music teacher and she was able to clear most of the floor space in the room an we got pretty much straight to business. Lindsay's relationship with the class allowed for a very fun and fast paced experience. It did not feel like 50min at all. We were able to go over some asanas (down dog, warrior 1, warrior 2, mountain) sing om...we did it loud (really loud), quiet and in the middle. Even a few moments silence at the end.

I wished i had taken some pictures.

Thank you to Lindsay, all of the young folks from the wed music class at 161 and my mom who was also a public school teacher.

PEACE, LOVE & VEGTABLES

Hey Jules,

So, last week my students and I read your blog on the smartboard and they were sooooo excited you wrote about them! They cheered and thoroughly enjoyed reading more about you on your site.

Wanted to share with you that today I was teaching my 1st graders the sun salutation. I've been doing as you did, giving them the names of the poses and have them do the asanas on their own. Today I was confident enough to put on some music. I chose Nelly's "Just A Dream" It was one of the happiest moments of my teaching time this year. I didn't even realize how well the chorus was going to work out for the flow. The kids loved it and so did I. What was so powerful for me was that all of the kids were moving together and working as a team. It was also powerful because of the fact that no words are spoken and they themselves are not playing instruments, but rather are moving together and looking and listening. That rarely happens in that building, and well, that rarely happens in life. I know that happens in yoga class all of the time in studios, but it was something I think I didn't really key into before today. When I put the music on, I was doing it with them and it was pure joy to be smiling with them and to have all of those amazing joyful eyes looking at me for what was to come next. We were working together in a fun and trusting way and with purpose and they were so into it!

Again, thanks for getting me started and for reading this post. Sorry it took so long to add it to your blog. Hoping you are enjoying your trip.

Love to you,
Lindsay
